25 Jul Disability Confident 2013 Conference
Last Thursday Arise was proud to be invited to attend the Minister for Disabled People’s inaugural ‘ Disability Confident Employment Conference’ at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, London. The headline speakers at the prestigious event were billed as Iain Duncan-Smith, the Sec of State for Work & Pensions; Vince Cable, the Secretary of State for Business Innovation & Skills; Esther McVey, the Minister for Disabled People; Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the entrepreneur; David Abraham, the CEO of Channel 4; and Andrew Witty, the CEO of GlaxoSmithKline. However, an unscheduled speaker kicked off proceedings in the form of the Prime Minister, David Cameron, who drew on his personal experience to map out his vision of what the campaign can achieve. Many of the solutions promoted on the day revolved around corporate organisations tailoring their recruitment and/or retention policies to be all-inclusive, but there was little discussion about how to bring work to those who need it rather than ask the people who need it to move to the work. Arise will continue to work with the Minister for Disabled People in shaping the agenda around this point, and we hope to be included in any future such events!
