5 things successful entrepreneurs have in common

What is success anyway? Does it always refer to people like Steve Jobs or Richard Branson – are money and innovation the only way to measure a person’s success? Not necessarily. Success often boils down to commitment, focus, hard work and integrity. These are characteristics that traditionally make up the concept of a successful entrepreneur. Whether someone has just developed the most exciting app of the decade or they’ve sold their company for millions of pounds, success doesn’t have to be assessed solely on the basis of these conditions.  We’d like to discuss success in a new form – one that entails more than the magnanimous traits ‘famous’ successful people have in common.

Setting priorities

No one can deny that ambition and determination are extremely important for anyone who wants to succeed. But, you could have a hundred things you want to accomplish and trying to get everything done all at once can eventually lead to burn out. Setting priorities is the first step in your journey of success. Successful people set tangible, realistic goals and ensure that that they know what they want to achieve and by when.

Successful entrepreneurs are not averse to failure

You will stumble, fall and fail. This is not a pessimistic assessment; it is an undeniable fact for any business or entrepreneur. Even the greatest business people are full of inspiring stories that describe their failures and challenges. Take the time to learn from each experience and know that you will see the light at the end of the tunnel eventually. The more resistant you are to a challenging situation, the less likely you will overcome it with any measure of success. The right way to go about it is to use failure as your stepping stone and stay positive about a better tomorrow.

Take time to recharge/rejuvenate

There is no shame in admitting when you are overwhelmed or have taken on more than you can manage. If you find yourself feeling drained or tired by simple tasks, it’s time to take a step back, turn off the laptop and all the other devices that alert you to work, and relax. Most successful people will agree that it’s important to plan some quality time with family, friends or loved ones, take a holiday, go on a long drive or simply sip a cup of tea and breathe.

Success comes from being emotionally committed

The quote ‘you have to love what you do’ rings true when we talk about success. You can’t possibly feel motivated or inspired to keep on working and giving your best if you don’t feel personally accountable for your work. Your sense of involvement in the work will largely determine your success in the long run.

Successful entrepreneurs push themselves out of their comfort zones

One thing that truly distinguishes successful people is their enthusiasm for challenges. They do not linger in self-doubt or shy away from tough times. They soldier on and are ever-ready to go the extra mile and try out things they are not familiar with. So, go forth and take on the next challenge headed your way. As the famous Mark Twain quote goes:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
