01 Nov Tips for Setting Up a Home Office
The advantages of setting up your very own business from the comforts of home are manifold and have convinced many to make the most of this wonderful trend. If you too have decided to go for it, among the first things you will need to consider is setting up your home office. Creating a home office space requires careful planning. We bring you some useful tips to set up a home office so that it would promote optimal efficiency, thus enhancing your professional performance.
Earmark a dedicated section of your home for your office: This would be the logical first step in the process of setting up a home office. Choose a space that is quiet and can be separated from the rest of your home such as a bedroom you convert into a study. There must be no noise and no distractions. Privacy is an essential factor without which you will be unable to concentrate. It is important for everyone in your family, including children, to understand that you are not to be disturbed during the time that you are servicing.
Take ergonomics criteria into consideration: Your home set up should match all the Health and Safety factors of any traditional office.
- Ensure that your chair is comfortable and ergonomic. The entire workstation should be installed correctly, with the keyboard at the correct height and the desk solid enough to bear the weight of the other equipment that is placed on it.
- The room should be bright, allowing for plenty of natural light. In case your home office does not have much scope for natural light, you should consider adding appropriate lighting to your work area by installing desk or floor lamps. Also make sure that you do not get any reflections on your computer screen and take care to minimise the glare so that your eyes remain free of strain
Use a separate phone line: For servicing with Arise you must use a standard analog phone line, which shouldn’t have any functionalities such as Call Waiting, Voice Mail or Caller ID. VoIP and mobile phones are not suitable for servicing Arise clients. If you have an existing phone line that you are not using, you can make this your dedicated phone line.
Putting together all the equipment: If you are in the initial stages of setting up your home office, resist the temptation to spend too much on home decor and focus on buying good quality equipment instead. Please see Arise technical requirements here for details. You will also need a headset with a microphone.
Adding a personal touch: One of the subtle but significant benefits of working from home is that you can design your work space according to your tastes, and include some familiar personal comfort items that add to the feel good factor. Hanging a poster bearing inspiring words, a beautiful painting, or a vase with your favourite flowers could have a subtle but sure impact on your mood and performance.
